Getting Out and Slowing Down

Last Saturday ArtWorksLB, a consortium of local non-profits and CD2 offered its kick-off workshop. Twenty-seven attended all inspired and supported by Dawn Mendelson and her artful ‘mosaic mafia team’. The feedback was over the top. We will be working to offer these community/network building gatherings around art in 2019. Keep your eyes peeled!

And finally, when you are out you’ll see (if you look up) 10 placemaking signs around Rose Park Historic District perimeter. It was a very long time coming! Thanks to Dennis Herbert, RPNA and James Osgood, LB Neighborhood Services and Jane and Art at SavOn Signs!!!

Getting out and about….although pedestrians may have the ‘right-of-way’ but it’s really smart to be a defensive pedestrian!

Jan 16th Wed 2pm-5pm – At 10th & Orizaba we’ll be out with many advocates of safety/mobility. #AlarmYourself2. RPNA received grant funds to help distribute personal alarms from the Port of LB, Heart of Ida will be there giving out pocket flashlights, and more. Come on by!

And here is a stocky stuffer for that older adult in your household. A very well prepared video highlight key considerations when walking across intersections and near parked cars. Again, many of these situations involve a pedestrian and a driver.  If you’re hit by a car travelling 35+/mph your chances of survival go down significantly. The speed limit on 10th Street is 30 mph. We met the crossing guard yesterday at 10th & Orizaba who was so thankful for the cross walk enhancement of flashing lights “now I have a way to slow down the cars”.

Belonging

RPNA has been at some important workshops lately. We attended conferences that addressed the need and importance of belonging. SAFE Refuge recently offered a community workshop on Suicide Prevention. For those that need services or would like to volunteer click here.

You’ll hearing more about Trauma Aware preparedness. It’s how we pass forward ‘bad experiences’ – let’s stop doing that! Watch for more workshops in 2019 or call CD2 who is leading the effort with the Health Department at 570-2222.

And the Investment without Displacement Conference. It’s impossible to feel that you belong if housing stability is taken from you. So Rose Park Neighborhood Association is working with our terrific neighborhood non-profits to offer a series of art workshops – where people belong. There is an introductory session Dec. 15th at 2pm – registration info email: info@rpna.org
