Light our Night – Today! February 3rd!

Rose Park Neighborhood Association (RPNA) and Rebuilding Together Long Beach (RTLB) are teaming up to install solar powered motion-detector lights around the Rose Park Neighborhood this Saturday, February 3rd from 9:30am to noon to help residents and business owners increase safety in their alleyways.

Our group of volunteers include Long Beach Eastside Division Commander Erik Herzog, Long Beach Port Police Division Commander Liz Griffin, Communication Deputy from Council Member Jeannine Pearce’s Office Devin Ablard, and volunteers from RPNA and RTLB.

If you see us out and about installing lights, please come by and say hello. This is a great opportunity to connect and chat with members of our great community!

Question: How much time does it take to prepare for a catastrophe?

Answer: 21 Weeks.

What **! Well, you are probably part way there. This resource from the American Red Cross is pretty comprehensive: pets, floods to medical emergencies, point of view for seniors and those with pets. It’s never to soon to prepare.

Out and about? Here are things NOT TO DO on public WiFI (according to AARP)

  1. Don’t access your email, online bank or credit card accounts using public Wi-Fi
  2. Watch out for fake Wi-Fi at coffee shops, hotels – make sure you are signing into the official Wi-Fi site.
  3. Don’t let your mobile devise automatically connect to a nearby Wi-Fi.
  4. Don’t surf using an unknown public network if the website requires sensitive information – like online shopping.

AARP offers these tips to reduce the increasing fraud against seniors.

Which brings up our LBPD Senior Safety Tips: Be Alert, Cautious and Self-Confident. Here are the highlights

  • At home – keep smoke detectors installed and operational in all sleeping rooms (yes, that includes your living-room if you are sleeping there)
  • Never give out information over the phone esp. that you are alone. Never let someone you don’t know into your house.
  • When you go out – secure your residence, leave a light on. Try to walk with someone, keep valuable close to your body, carry as little cash as needed.
